BJJ Power vs BJJ Dominate.

Train explosive power, or choose the harder full-body performance plan

The short answer

Power for explosiveness. Dominate for the harder all-round push.

Choose BJJ Power if you feel strong enough but slow or flat in shots, sprawls, scrambles and throws. Choose BJJ Dominate if you want a broader, harder strength & conditioning plan. The mistake is thinking they're the same — power is a specific quality; full-body performance is broader.

Key takeaway

Pick the tool that solves the actual problem.

"I need to be more explosive" → BJJ Power. "I want a harder all-round program" → BJJ Dominate. "I'm not even lifting consistently yet" → BJJ Strength Foundation or BJJ Strong first. That's not a downgrade — it's building the base before sharpening the blade.

What each is for

Power block vs harder full-body block.

BJJ Power

Explosiveness

Strength expressed fast — for shots, sprawls, bridges, wrestle-ups, scrambles, grip breaks and throws. Fast, crisp, high quality.

Strong but slowHave a strength baseSpeed & quality focusNot every set to fatigue

Power isn't conditioning — if speed drops, the set's over.

BJJ Dominate

Harder all-round

The harder full-body performance option — broader than power: strength, athleticism, conditioning support, core, grip, carry, rotation.

For a bigger overall push, not a single-quality block.

Power needs strength first

If you're weak, your best power program is a strength program.

Power = force × velocity. If the force side is low, building strength improves power even before advanced explosive work. A beginner doesn't need contrast training — they need to get stronger. Don't skip the base because the explosive stuff looks cooler.

Then sharpenBJJ Power
Power is not "harder cardio." It should leave you sharp, not destroyed — jumps, throws, slams, swings, push-press, Olympic derivatives, low-rep explosive work with enough rest to move fast again. For grapplers used to "if I'm not dying it's not working," that mindset is wrong here: speed is the signal, not misery.

Pick by weak link

Match the program to the limiter.

Strong but slow

BJJ Power

Sharper shots, sprawls, scrambles and throws — with a strength base behind it.

The explosiveness block
Want harder all-round

BJJ Dominate

Broader performance, and you recover well.

A bigger full-body push
Missing the base

BJJ Strong

Complete base first, or if unsure Dominate is too much.

The better default
New to lifting

Strength Foundation

The entry point — clean reps and consistency.

Neither is the conditioning answer. If your gas tank is the main problem, use Basic Cardio or Max Gas Tank. And if muscle is the goal, use BJJ Jacked — don't buy the wrong tool because you like the name.

Can you do both

One main program. Sequence the rest.

Most shouldn't run both as full programs at once — explosive work needs freshness, hard full-body work needs recovery. Sequence, or use small doses inside one plan.

Sequence

Build the base with Strong/Dominate, then a focused BJJ Power block — or Power first if explosiveness is the clear weak link.

Small doses

On Dominate and want more power Add small explosive doses only if recovery allows — don't bolt on a second program.

High BJJ volume

Already cooked from the mats The harder program isn't the brave choice — it may just be the dumb one. BJJ Strong is often the better default.

The BJJ Strong approach

Choose the program that solves your limiting factor.

Weak → build strength. Strong but slow → train power. Have the base and want a harder full-body block → Dominate. Gassing → fix conditioning. Stiff → fix mobility. Want size → run the hypertrophy block. The program should match the problem — that's the whole game.

FAQ

Quick answers.

What's the difference between BJJ Power and BJJ Dominate +
BJJ Power is focused on explosive power. BJJ Dominate is a harder full-body performance program with a broader training focus.
Who should choose BJJ Power +
Grapplers whose main goal is explosiveness and who already have enough strength base to benefit from power-focused work.
Who should choose BJJ Dominate +
Grapplers who want the harder full-body performance option and can recover from a more demanding program.
Is BJJ Power good for beginners +
Beginners can do simple power drills, but most should build strength first with BJJ Strength Foundation or BJJ Strong before a power-focused program.
Can I run both together +
Most shouldn't run both as full programs at once. Sequence them or choose one main program.
What if I want better conditioning +
Use Basic Cardio or Max Gas Tank — power training is not the same as conditioning.
What if I'm strong but slow +
BJJ Power is probably the better fit.
What if I'm not strong yet +
Build strength first with BJJ Strength Foundation or BJJ Strong.
